The DAP (Design As Protest) Collective is an anti-racist, non-hierarchical, action-based collective dedicated to advancing Design Justice in the built environment. We are BIPOC designers mobilizing strategies to dismantle the privilege and power structures that have co-opted architecture and design as tools of oppression.

DAP exists to hold the design professions accountable in reversing the violence and injustice that architecture, landscape architecture, design, and urban planning practices have inflicted upon Black people and communities of color. DAP champions the radical vision of racial, social, and cultural reparation through the process and outcomes of Design Justice.

Design As Protest was started in 2015 and reactivated as the DAP Collective in June 2020. DAP organizers engage virtually and across the United States, UK, and Canada.

 DAP Organizing Teams

  • Academic Organizing

Serves as a resource and support space for students and alumni organizing and demanding a transformation in their design education, with goal of building a coalition for all schools coming together to organize for change within academia*.

  • Coordination + Care

Fosters mutual benefit for all of the members of DAP. We define Collective Care as the combined coordination of resources and skills to meet the needs of DAP members; building solidarity and trust among members, and strengthening our organizational practices and policies in order to empower and expand our movement work.

  • DAP Studio

Develops creative content, graphics, projects, and strategies that narrativize and visualize our collective vision and mission of design justice. From branding to storytelling, DAP Studio efforts support the communications of the Design Justice Demands, complement direct action campaigns, and humanize DAP research and data.

  • Data + Research

Responsible for gathering raw data and forming comprehensive databases and interactive tools which can then be adapted by other teams in the DAP Collective and shared as compelling stories in the broader movement towards liberation.

  • Direct Action

Organizes national protest campaigns designed to hold accountable institutions and individuals that obstruct the liberation of Black, Indigenous, and brown communities. And we are prepared to put our bodies on the line to do this work.

  • Field Organizing

Working to bridge the connection between the demands and real-world "practice" application in creating an anti-racist design profession, which includes outreach to firms, professional organizations, and local/state/federal elected officials and policymakers.

  • Planning + Policy

Works to bring light to this history and propose progressive policies to undo the centuries of disinvestment and harm.

  • Youth Organizing

The DAP Youth team works to imagine and create opportunities for youth to become both designers and advocates for racial and social justice in their schools, neighborhoods, cities, and beyond.
